When I was about seven or eight years old, my sister and I would spend hours playing with my mom’s old fabric suitcase. This suitcase, considered now to be ‘vintage’ was plaid patterned with brown stitching and smelled faintly of my mom’s perfume. The best part, however, was that my sister and I could fit comfortably inside! It had a front zipper that could be zipped from the inside-out to aid us when we would climb in before pushing each other around the house and giggling the entire ride. Of course my mom was always standing by to ensure that we kept the zipper open half-way, for quick evacuation and of course we thought, to allow for a better view. But our main concern was ensuring our dresses and pretty nightgowns wouldn’t get wrinkled or caught in the zipper…we loved playing in dress-up clothes, especially my grandmother’s old silk, chiffon night gowns – they were the softest. Hey, if we were going somewhere with our luggage, of course we had to look nice. How funny it is looking back on how much fun we used to have playing with that silly suitcase…I wonder whatever happened to it…
Who would have known years later, how much luggage would become such a huge part of my life as I became destined for new adventures. My biggest adventure thus far began eight months ago, when my husband and I left the east coast of the US and moved our life overseas to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. For almost three months, I worked tirelessly to fit my essentials (which to my disappointment did not include my shoe collection) into four small pieces of luggage for our journey to the opposite side of the world. In this time, our life overseas has been full of many experiences while traveling, discovering new foods and cultures, and most importantly exploring new sides of fashion. I may not be wearing my mom’s dresses or my grandma’s nightgowns while flying through the house in a vintage suitcase, but it sure has felt like the ride of my life. I hope you enjoy being a part of my adventures, while trying to look good in…Wrinkled Chiffon.
