This past weekend we traveled to the island of Phuket (pronounced POOH KET and not like the bad word, ha!) in Thailand. It was a wonderful birthday weekend, as I quickly mentioned here! One of the best things about living in Kuala Lumpur is the ability to travel to places like Thailand on a quick one hour plane flight. A great low cost carrier airline here in Asia is AirAsia, which we travel on very frequently. The flights are quick, cheap and pretty comfortable. Here I am getting ready to board the plane on our way to Phuket.
Landing in Thailand, I looked at my husband and said, “I still can’t believe we are traveling to Thailand for my birthday!” But it’s just like flying on a plane from Washington, D.C. to New York for the weekend…it’s that close! So why not! Especially when somewhere that close looks like this!
We visited some beautiful beaches over the weekend; one we loved was Surin Beach. Don’t you just love this sign and yes, that’s my husband swimming there in the background. He never obeys the rules, ha! Honestly though, if I zoomed out on this picture the whole shoreline was filled with swimmers! I guess no one was obeying the signs that day.
We also took a day trip out to James Bond Island by speedboat.
On our way, we explored some caves.
Here is James Bond Island, made famous from the James Bond movie, “The Man with the Golden Gun” made in 1974.
One of my favorite parts of the weekend was canoeing in and out of these beautiful caves. Did you watch the Bachelorette last season? This is the same date that Ashley took with some of her bachelors, or so I am told.
And for our nightly entertainment, we visited the crazy area of Patong in Phuket. I can only say one thing…you have got to see some of the crazy shows.
Before going to sleep each night, this was our sunset…how amazing!
“BEST OF” LIST – PHUKET, THAILAND
1.) Taking a day trip to James Bond Island and sea canoeing. The tour we chose was with SIMBA, who did an amazing job. Ask for Jenny…she is the sweetest and made my birthday so special!
2.) Renting a moped and driving along the coast, stopping at Surin and Kamala beach.
3.) Going out for a night in Patong.
4.) Checking out FantaSea...it’s definitely worth seeing the special effects and elephants perform.
5.) If time allows, taking a day trip to Phi Phi Island and seeing where the movie, “The Beach” was filmed.
6.) Watching the sunset from your hotel over the water. We loved our view from the Paresa.

Saw a shirt yesterday…”Just Phuket” Ha ha!
Phuket is beautiful! I’ve heard that Patong is totally crazytown!!
How incredible you’re from the U.S but living in Kuala Lumpa now (I just read your about me). I am from Australia but have visited Phuket twice now for 2 weeks and then a 3 week trip – I absolutley adore the place. I have done everything on your to do list – I LOVED our trip out to Phi Phi island and exploring James Bond island. You have to put massages on there though Because of the amazing exchange rate I was getting 2 – 3 massages a day (I never get them here in Australia). Loved all your photos though Took me back in time.

Thailand is my dream destination. Your trip looks like it was fantastic.
When I first saw your photos, my first thought was it looked like the setting for The Beach, ha. What an amazing way to spend your birthday!!
