This past weekend we attended the Rugby Sevens here in Hong Kong! If you have not heard of the Rugby Sevens or know exactly what is it, than you are in the exact same boat I was in on Friday night. When my husband came home and excitedly said we had tickets, I didn’t realize how special of an opportunity this truly was or what attending the Rugby Sevens actually meant. So I slipped on my 7 Jeans and we left for the stadium.
Once a year rugby teams representing countries from around the world gather for a three day tournament in Hong Kong. The teams play seven aside rugby which is a modified form of traditional rugby. Traditional rugby consists of 15 players on each team with games lasting 80-90 minutes (40 minute halves). In Rugby Sevens, however, teams only consist of 7 players and the games last 20 minutes (7-10 minute halves). This type of rugby is much faster-paced, higher scoring and obviously more exciting than traditional rugby. Within the four hours we watched 10 different games!
While the rugby was exciting for my husband, what I found more interesting was the people watching. I hope you enjoy some of our pictures below. Happy Tuesday!
Here’s some photos of the stadium and the players…which to be honest, didn’t seem to be the main attraction for attending the Sevens. The “fans” were more interested in drinking and people watching, and there was much of that to be done! I felt like I was back in college again cheering for my favorite team in the student section. It was absolute madness!
Little did I know that one of the biggest traditions about the Rugby Sevens in Hong Kong is the costumes, YES, the costumes! Full-grown men and women dress in anything from the Angry Birds to Geisha girls. I have never seen anything like it!
And just in case you were wondering Where’s Waldo…well three of them were right in front of me! Oh what a memory of our first Rugby Sevens.
Oh my the costumes are unreal!!
