Adding Vintage to Your Style

Along Queens Road East near our apartment in Hong Kong lies a strip of beautiful clothing boutiques.  Before I left for the holidays I spotted this beautiful vintage wrap in one of their windows.  A surprise from my husband, it soon became one of my favorite pieces in my closet!  Today I’m styling it for the first time on Wrinkled Chiffon for this week’s PLAY style with a peplum top and peplum skirt, which together look like one piece.  To fasten the wrap together I used my beautiful brooch (more on brooches below) purchased this past summer in Paris.  This gorgeous, vintage Cameo brooch has definitely become one of my favorite accessories in my jewelry box.  Last but not least, I was excited to style my new DIY pearl bobby pins.  Once I arrive back in Hong Kong, I look forward to posting more about some of Hong Kong’s beautiful boutiques…stay tuned!

DIY-Makeup Brush Holder

Happy Tuesday!  Today I want to share another fun DIY project…a DIY Makeup Brush Holder!  If you can remember during this post, I mentioned a woodworking project I was working on with my dad.  Well, this is it!  I’m not sure why it took me so long to post, but better late than never.  What a fun, easy project that didn’t cost a thing!  Now, I have to admit, my dad has some pretty amazing woodworking skills (as mentioned here) and tools which allowed us to easily complete this project.  But if you have a drill and a couple pieces of wood, believe me, you can do it too!  Here’s our step-by-step…

1.)  I started with two 2×4’s and glued them together to make a thicker piece of wood.

2.)  With my dad’s Compound Miter Saw (chow saw) we shaved down all sides to form a square block.

3.)  Next, I sanded down all sides of the wooden block to ensure each section was smooth.

4.)  I gathered my makeup brushes together and measured the ends of each.  Then I drew a bunch of circles on the block to map out where I wanted the holes drilled for my brushes.

5.)  Then the drilling began…depending on the size of your drill bits, you can pick the various sizes of holes you would like.

6.)  Have fun and don’t worry about being too perfect with all the holes…be creative with varying the larger and smaller size holes all around the wooden block.

7.)  After you have completed drilling your holes, blow out all the remaining sawdust.  If you want to add some color to the block, choose your favorite spray paint.  I choose a light gold color.  Remember, to always wear your gloves when spray painting and spray several light coats every ten minutes until you achieve your desired color.

8.)  Almost done…I think one of the most important things about creating, building, making and even buying something is to date it.  So add a special touch to your piece by dating and signing it.

9.)  Then celebrate!

10.)  Your DIY Makeup Brush Holder is complete!

Smart and Sexy

Wearing leather used to be reserved for bikers, bad boys and the occasional Halloween costume.  However, leather has come back in a big way and it’s better than ever.  Leather skirts, leather pants and leggings, leather jackets, leather gloves…you can find leather pieces in just about any color or style!  This week I’m going to have fun with some of my favorite leather pieces and share how I have incorporated them into my daily style.  You can even wear leather to work!  If you are a bit hesitant about how to style your leather, start small with some gloves or a cute panel leather skirt.  Have fun with your style this season…I am.  Today, for my work style, I’m wearing one of my favorite leather skirts – be smart and sexy at the same time.  Happy Monday!
