Spotted-Mary Janes

“Last dance with Mary Jane…”, these lyrics from Tom Petty’s song play in my head when I slip on my Mary Jane shoes.  Not a very happy song, but my Mary Janes sure make me happy, especially these red patent leather ones!  This week I’m styling another item from MY ONE HUNDRED, number 55, Mary Janes.  Do you know how these popular buckle shoes got their name?  Well, in an old comic strip titled Buster Brown, which was first published in 1902, Mary Jane was written as the “sweetheart” of the title character.  In 1904, the creator of the Buster Brown comic strip traveled to the St. Louis World’s Fair and sold licenses to approximately 200 different companies to use his Buster Brown character as advertisement for their products.  Among these companies was the Brown Shoe Company, who later hired actors to play Buster Brown’s characters in theatres and stores.  The performer that dressed as Buster Brown’s sweetheart wore a style of shoe which soon came to be known by her name…Mary Jane.

Travel-Happy Valley Race Course, Hong Kong

Being from up north on the East Coast, when I think of Happy Valley, I think of Penn State University.  However, after moving to Hong Kong, we realized that Happy Valley means a whole different thing to the Chinese and to the expats – it means Happy Valley Race Course!  As posted here in what I wore, Happy Valley is nestled between the numerous skyscrapers of the city and when it’s race night the sky is illuminated with its lights.  Being my very first horse race, I was extremely excited and couldn’t wait to catch a glimpse of the beautiful horses racing by…and when they did, the roar of the crowds was enough to get your heart beating.  What an exciting night!

Holiday Animal Print

For this week’s WORK style I paired my favorite red dress pants (highlighted here) with a tweed blazer, some animal print and a cozy fur vest.  This vest is a perfect piece to add to your work style when you transition from coffee to cocktails.  Have a great evening!
